I think the problem with this conference is a lack of hard chairing: too many speakers are getting away with dodging hard questions and pretty straight product plugs, and the restlessness in the audience is palpable. These are some good speakers: they need equally good moderation to get the best out of them.
Mind you, better air con in the hall would help, too…
Update: an example: “Where are your users coming from?” “Everywhere.” And then he changes the subject. Aaargh.

Totally agree. Whenever there could be the beginning of an interesting discussion, it's like it would vanish...
(and aircon, yes, not to mention the wifi connexion...)

It is good to have so many interesting people in the same place on a single day. The bad part of this is the problems you mention, which I think are unavoidable.

Agreed, the panels are too matey for my liking. They seem to have been selected by how much Loic likes them (was it really necessary to slobber quite so much over Tariq (Netvibes?). The WiFi is a disgrace on my side of the hall. The aircon is apalling. Apart from that, the people are great, the networking is excellent and the food is, well, the food is French (and a bit conceptual).
