I'm dying to point out that while the gentleman has Bret Maverick's name, he has cousin Beau's accent.
I'm just not certain your readers will be familiar with late 50's American TV shows.

Oh, we know them all right. They were shown during the mornings when we were on our summer holidays as kids.
I imagine Mr Garner has had to deal with the references his whole life.
