It looks like a cell to me, because I'm a science geek like that, and the best analogy I can make is a WoW one, so sorry about that :)
Like if it was meant to be a raiding guild, the nucleus is the core group of raiders or the officers, and the other stuff floating around in the cytoplasm is the other members of the guild, who occasionally raid, but not so often as the ones who make up the nucleus. Some of them are eventually drawn into the nucleus, but others maintain their position as floating bits, mitochondria or whatnot, who are still contained in the cell (or guild), but haven't yet been bound up as part of the nucleus. Yep. :)
Proper answer: that a community isn't self-contained, and intersects with other communities and individuals elsewhere (maybe even OMG CONSUMERS). That this is about 7,000 times more true on the internets. Also that the intersections are good and should be cultivated.

Interesting...um a network? or a pizza design.
uhhh...
lots of different people from different communities all come to one place and create a bigger community?
either that, or you have bloodshot eyes, and are trying to find some eyedrops.
(you have to admit it looks like an eyeball).
It does look quite a lot like an eyeball, doesn't it?
Although, I do have bloodshot eyes.
Makes perfect sense to me!
Yes, well, you're one of us. You have the membership card and secret club badge and everything...
That communities tend to be inward looking & are hard to crack? Or the thing about the eyes.
PS - I like this idea and may have to steal it, sorry, use it for inspiration
Social media is all about stea... sharing ideas. :-)
It, of course, looks like the internet cloud to me.
Though, I think I've made similar diagrams when trying to explain interpersonal relationships within a specific group of people...
I think you're the closest so far, Gwen. :)
Ok, I will try again..

Is something to do with the Telegraph newsroom?

Winnah! You have point 1, Nathan. I doubt anyone will get point 2.
Umm, the most cleverly disguised goatse ever?
No - but that's an interesting challenge for the next brainstorming session...
