What the Garner Hype Cycle Means For Journalists

It's that time of the year again. Yes, it's the Gartner Hype Cycle:

Gartner Hype Cycle 2008
Neville Hobson has produced a good analysis of it against previous years, but I want to highlight a few journalism-relevant points:
  • Location-aware apps are rising up the slope of enlightenment. You have 18 months, tops, to start geo-coding your content. Devices like the iPhone and the competitors starting to come from the existing incumbents will rapidly change how people interact with content. We need to be putting the infrastructure in place now.
  • Corporate blogging has bottomed out in the Trough of Disillusionment, and is set to rise very rapidly over the next year. In the B2B space in particular, we need to get on top of blogging within the next year, or we'll eb squeezed between companies doing it for themselves and the keen, talented amateur.
  • Web 2.0 is about to go through the disillusionment phase. Great. That's the time to integrate it into what we do - but note that they're predicting less than 2 years to mainstream adoption. Not much time - and given how long it's taken us to get on top of Web 1.0/1.5 tech like forums or blogs, that's a wee bit scary.
